Tracheoesophageal Fistula
Imaging findings
Chest radiographs demonstrate dilatation of the esophagus with air. Chest CT confirms a communication/fistula between the trachea and esophagus, resulting in marked distension of the esophagus with air. Mild bronchial wall thickening and aspiration-related changes are also noted.
Key takeaways
Unsuspected tracheoesophageal fistula can present in adulthood after a lifetime of respiratory symptoms. Esophageal dysmotility and distension may persist even after surgical closure of the fistula, as it is often part of the congenital spectrum of the disease.
