Infarction with Pseudoaneurysm and ECMO complications

Imaging findings

A large Left Anterior Descending (LAD) territory infarct with sub-endocardial hypoperfusion. Following the placement of an intra-aortic balloon pump, a pseudoaneurysm developed at the insertion site with associated hematoma. The patient later developed rapidly progressive lung consolidation while on ECMO.

Key takeaways

Rapidly clearing lung opacities in patients on ECMO are often attributed to atelectasis resulting from low tidal volume ventilation rather than primary lung disease or persistent edema.
