Hybrid Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation and Bronchogenic Cyst
Imaging findings
Chest CT shows a low-attenuation fluid-filled cyst located along the inferior pulmonary ligament in close relation to the esophagus, consistent with a bronchogenic cyst. Contiguous with this mediastinal cyst is an intrapulmonary mass containing multiple abnormal, bizarre cystic air spaces and bronchi, supplied by the pulmonary circulation without evidence of systemic arterial supply.
Key takeaways
Congenital foregut anomalies can manifest as hybrid or transitional lesions containing features of both bronchogenic cysts and congenital pulmonary airway malformations. These contiguous lesions typically remain stable over decades, but can occasionally acquire aeration or develop superinfections if they communicate with the tracheobronchial tree.
