Cephalization in Chronic Heart Failure
Imaging findings
Chest radiograph shows cardiomegaly and redistribution of pulmonary blood flow to the upper lobes (cephalization). The superior pulmonary veins are dilated and course lateral to the corresponding arteries.
Key takeaways
Cephalization is a marker of chronic (not acute) left ventricular failure and pulmonary venous hypertension. It requires weeks to months of vascular remodeling to occur, and does not present in acute myocardial infarction.
